It was built almost directly on the Mason-Dixon Line which divides Maryland and Delaware. At the site a marker commemorates the work of the English engineers. On one side is the coat of arms of William Penn and on the other is that of Lord Delaware.

Interesting Fact:
It was America's first submarine type lighthouse. This "Victorian" structure of cast-iron, built on a submarine foundation, rests on a concrete caisson completely surrounded by water. It aids navigation in the bay off Bowers Beach.

Interesting Fact:
It was named after the ship "John" which was wrecked in 1787 near the present structure. The beacon which was automated in 1973, is today still a working guide to navigation.
