It was started in 1774 by Virginia Colony but the Revolutionary war precluded further work. In 1790 congress authorized the continuation of the work and it was done by John McComb Jr. who later built Montauk Point.

1st Keeper: Captain Wm. Asbury Crockett
Height: 38 feet
In 1914, Capt. Crockett's sailboat capsized during his usual supply run, while his helper looked on helplessly. The Captain perished, leaving a wife and 5 children.
